Olivier has lived and worked in China for almost three decades. He is deeply familiar with the Chinese culture and environment. An expert in cross-cultural and strategic communication, he has managed multicultural teams, communicating contents empathically between cultures and value-systems. His strong expertise helps him to support executives of all levels in solving communication issues with internal or external stakeholders, such as problems in achieving smooth communication with colleagues, superiors, partners, and clients.
He has a rich experience and understanding of several industries. He started his career as a travel guide in China for a German travel agency, before becoming the General Manager of a dancing shoe factory with 100% Chinese staff for two years in Fuzhou, Fujian, where his main tasks included damage control and modernization of production. He then set up a premium soft toy factory with 150 employees in Shenzhen, Guangdong, which he led for two years as General Manager, before setting up his own stock photo agency in Hong Kong.
He was hired as a business consultant in Beijing by Ruder Finn, a leading international PR agency. He conducted training sessions for CEOs and high-ranking senior executives of major international and Chinese companies like Siemens, Volkswagen, ABB and others, supporting them in their interactions with Chinese media, government, and clients, as well as in conducting their business in China and Western countries with cultural sensitivity.
Olivier is proficient at managing relationships and bridging interests between Chinese and Western stakeholders from different industries. He helps all sides to make sense of cultural and social differences and interact effectively. He supports executives to develop their abilities for strategic communications, as well as their emotional intelligence.
Holder of a PhD in sociology from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Olivier has a keen interest in topics such as social responsibility among corporate and other social actors in today’s China. He possesses impeccable language skills in Mandarin Chinese and English. A French native, he is also fluent in German. He has been operating from Hangzhou, Zhejiang, since 2016.

1) Cultural sensitivities
This is underlying almost everything I have been doing so far. One example: a top executive asked to be coached about cultural differences between Chinese colleagues and those coming from the company's original country. During our interactions, it became clear that the real issue was not about interactions between Chinese and non-Chinese colleagues, but about different mindsets and perceptions such as technical vs. non-technical staff. We re-focused on these issues and found a solution that allowed to company to be more perception-driven in its responses to customer complaints.
2) Develop strategic vision
As the leader of Ruder Finn's Insight and a trainer/coach for top executives, a part of my work was to support clients in developing a strategic vision for China. A recent example, in partnership with Ruder Finn, was to help two top managers of a German-Chinese JV to position a new product while ensuring that this new product would help the company to strengthen its strategy in the coming years. In the course of our exchanges, we identified some points which did not make sense and that did not contribute to a clear long-term strategy in terms of positioning and brand values. We then focused on finding new directions fitting into the brand values, but also into the overall JV long-term objectives.
